SDG 13: climate action
Roularta takes urgent action to combat climate change and its impact.
We are resolutely working towards CO2 neutrality by 2050 and actively commit ourselves to a green living environment. A sustainable energy and raw materials policy is central.
striving for CO2 neutrality
We aim for CO2 neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 and have developed a concrete step-by-step plan to achieve this objective by 2050:
-
Measure (2021–2022): We mapped out our carbon footprint
-
Analyse (2023): We conducted energy audits in both the production environment and offices
-
Reduce (2024–2030): We will act on the recommendations from the audits and invest in new energy-efficient drying ovens for the printing house and in an additional solar panel park. Meanwhile, we will continue ISO 50001 certification
-
Neutralise (2031–…): We will purchase green electricity and offset the remaining CO2 emissions from gas consumption
Scope 3 includes indirect carbon emissions, which the company does not control directly. To contribute to lowering these emissions as well, we ask our suppliers to sign a sustainable purchasing charter.

… our Sustainability Committee closely monitors the roadmap to CO2 neutrality based on a detailed climate plan.
biodiversity
As a Green Deal company, we purposefully contribute to improved biodiversity and a pleasant living environment.
- We allocated 5.8 hectares of company grounds to wild nature with flower borders, a wadi, beehives, flower meadows, shrub-filled verges, nesting boxes with a successful brood for the kestrel, and insect hotels. This earned us the Biodiversity Business Park award in 2021
- Around the headquarters in Roeselare, no fewer than 15,000 trees were planted, partly using the Miyawaki method and with attention to solitary specimens
- We remove moss and weeds from parking areas biologically using electric current installations
reforestation
Under the motto “Let’s make the desert green,” we are joining forces with the non-profit organization Lignaverda. Together, we aim to establish 41 hectares of forest in Senegal. This ambitious reforestation project has not only an ecological impact but also a considerable social impact.
-
Ecological impact. Thanks to a funding of 25,000 euros, Lignaverda can establish 41 hectares of forest, which is the equivalent of about 58 football fields and good for an annual CO2 capture of 143 to 205 tons. This brings us an important step closer to the 2050 target of CO2 Neutrality. It is not about the random planting of trees, but about the thoughtful establishment of forests. The project also boosts local biodiversity
-
Social impact. Since trees are worth more alive than cut down – considering the long durability of raw materials such as Arabic gum and oil from the Balanites – the project provides income security. That financial independence simultaneously promotes the empowerment of women and thereby also their children’s access to education
